Cut |
This is the simplest border type. It can be used to create a simple hole for cutwork or a cut-out piece to be sewn on as stumpwork. It provides either a cutting line without any embroidery, or a closed cutting line with optional stabilizing runs. This border type is suitable for cutwork or stumpwork. |
Piece |
This border type produces a cutout fabric piece with an embroidered border, usually satin. It may include stabilizing runs before and/or after the embroidered border followed by a cutting line. Generally piece borders are used for stumpwork. |
Hole (raw edge) |
This border type includes an embroidered border, usually satin, followed by a cutting line to create a hole in fabric. It may include a stabilizing run. This border type is suitable for cutwork. |
Hole (covered edge) |
At its simplest, this border type produces a hole in fabric covered by an embroidered edge of satin or other embroidery. It may also include a stabilizing run, tackdown run (for stabilizer), and/or net fill. This border type is suitable for cutwork. |
Tip: Cutwork generally involves cutting holes within fabrics, while stumpwork involves cutting out stumpwork pieces, similar to badges. For this reason, stumpwork borders will be ‘pieces’ rather than ‘holes’.
